GAK Architecture, currently based in Manitowoc WI, seeks to apply 30 years of diverse Architectural and Structural design experience to the development of true conceptual building art. Not unlike the modernists of the past century, such as Kahn, Le Corbusier, and Johnson, we look to interpret minimalist modernism of the past into a modernism of today where honesty is observed through transparent structure, expressive use of materials, and a bold unapologetic individualism. We look to exploit simple monumental forms, perceived weight, clean simple detail and well balanced compositions using positive and negative space connected to massive layered volumes. Focal points are keyed laterally and vertically from well composed interior points in space linked to the exterior using an axis reflected in the main structure. This kind of juxtaposition between contrasting elements is to be a common building block throughout all of our building design work. It is our hope that every building design will be more adequately described as functional art where legibility, continuity, and interpretation guide and enrich the occupants experience instead of traditional conforms. Like all good architects and functional artist's, our first commitment is to the owner, and the local context, where participation in the design process is facilitated to the fullest. Design intent, means, and purpose of design must spring from a combined effort of expressive thought, an extension of the owner(s)/occupants will and agreement, not a subjective interpretation of the artist alone. To honor our commitment to you the owner and respective occupants, we urge your participation through detailed discussion during the initial design process.
